Understanding Toggle & gift card terminology

If you're new to Toggle or gift cards in general we might occasionally use words you're unfamiliar with, or perhaps we may use different words to mean the same thing.

It's usually pretty clear what is meant, but we've compiled a very short list of words and what they mean.😀

Glossary & meaning

"Gift card", "Voucher", "e-gift"

At Toggle you can sell both digital and physical gift cards - also known as vouchers. They're two words which mean the same thing.

The digital gift cards are sent via email and physical gift cards are printed onto a card and shipped or sold in-venue.

Sometimes people associate "gift card" with the physical version and "voucher" as something more digital.

Saying something like "e-gift" is another way to distinguish a digital gift card from a physical one. Either way, it's fine whichever terms you prefer to use.

"Breakage"

This is an accounting word you'll likely find on your reports and it just means "expired". So if a gift card shows as breakage it means it's now expired and any balance that was left on the gift card has been automatically wiped from it.

"EPOS", "POS", "Till", "Terminal"

When a guest visits your venue to redeem their gift card, you can redeem it on your Point-of-Sale system, usually referred to as something like a POS or till or terminal. We mean the same thing when using these words interchangeably.

"Balance", "Value", "Funds", "Money"

When referring to the money that's been loaded onto a gift card, different words are used to mean the same thing - if a gift card has been sold with £50 then you could say that it now has a balance of £50 to spend, or its value is £50. It means the same thing.


"Customer", "Guest"

Since Toggle primarily operates in the Hospitality sector we often refer to customers as guests since they are usually people who visit an establishment such as a bar or restaurant. Both words mean the same thing though!
