What is a payment gateway?

A payment gateway is a platform that allows you to securely accept online payments from customers when they purchase a gift card from your Toggle shop.

When a customer buys a gift card through your shop, the payment gateway processes the transaction by handling the payment details and communicating with the customer’s bank. It acts as a link between Toggle and the customer's bank account, ensuring that the payment goes through smoothly.

Where do the payments go to?

All online payments made by your customers on your Toggle shop goes to your payment gateway.

Toggle doesn't hold or store any payments made by your customers - Toggle only stores the order details and the live balances of the gift cards.

How do refunds get processed?

Because your payment gateway holds the payments for online orders, all refunds need to be done on there.

And because Toggle stores the order details and gift card balance (if the order was for a gift card) then you'll need to cancel the order on Toggle to void the gift card.

More details on this here.

What payment gateways can I use on Toggle?

Toggle currently integrates with the following payment gateways:

Stripe

Trust Payments

Global Payments

PayPal

Adyen

Braintree

Which payment gateway should I pick?

Speak to your team (particularly finance) to determine if you already have a payment gateway for any other e-commerce channels you have. You could use the same one for Toggle.

If you don't have any payment gateway you should research each one online and see which suits you - based on costs, set up time, customer support, security measures, ease of use, etc.

How do I know if a payment gateway is set up?

If you go to Settings > Payment Settings on your Toggle dashboard you'll know if you're connected with one of them if they are highlighted in green. If none are highlighted in green then you don't have a payment gateway set up (you'll also see a red finish your set up on the dashboard indicating it's not been done).

How are payments taken if no payment gateway is set up?

Without a payment gateway set up on your Toggle account, you cannot take payments from your customers for gift cards online. Any customer who reaches your checkout page will see a message saying 'This shop doesn't have any payment methods available at the moment' like shown in the example below and won't be able to make their payment.

How do I know if a customer has placed an order?

Go to the Purchases page on your Toggle dashboard to see orders that have been successfully placed. If you want to see the payments for those orders you will need to log into your payment gateway.

How do I find an order I'm seeing on Toggle on my payment gateway?

The best way to find the exact order you're seeing on your Toggle dashboard on your payment gateway is to use the merchant transaction reference.

On the screenshot below you can see this reference is included next to every order placed online. Copy it and then use the search filters your payment gateway provides to locate the payment. You can also search the customer name and find the payment on your payment gateway.
