Toggle has a built-in feature that allows your customers to send a digital voucher by SMS.
Please check our pricing/billing for this feature below.
Note: SMS vouchers will only work for Gift Card and Experience products and not for Tickets, Retail or Pay-It-Forward products.
This guide will show you how SMS vouchers look like on your dashboard, on the online shop, and for the customer.
Once SMS is switch on for your account...
Once the Toggle team enables SMS for your account, all digital Gift Card and Experience products will show 'SMS' as a fulfilment option in your Shop dashboard.
Example below:
Picking the SMS option at checkout...
Any digital Gift Card or Experience that's on your Toggle shop will show the SMS option at the checkout page.
Customers will see the option to add a mobile number to receive the voucher by SMS when they add any digital gift card or experience to their basket.
If the customer only adds a mobile number and not an email address during the Delivery stage at checkout, they'll only receive the voucher by SMS. If they enter an email and a mobile number, they'll receive the same voucher by email and SMS.
The customer will have the choice to send the SMS to someone else (by clicking the “Someone Else” button) or to themselves (by clicking the “Myself” button).
Sending to Someone Else
If the customer chooses this option, they will:
Enter the recipient’s name, email, and their mobile number.
The mobile number must be confirmed (similar to confirming an email).
The SMS delivery fee is shown in this step (+30p)
If a mobile number is entered here, SMS will be used for delivery.
Sending to Myself
If the customer chooses this option, they will:
Enter their own name, email, and their mobile number.
A new checkbox lets them also send the gift card by SMS to their number.
The SMS delivery fee is shown when this is ticked (+30p)
If not ticked, delivery is by email only.
At the payment screen the customer will see the cost of the voucher (in the example below it's £20) and the additional payment of 30p for sending it by SMS too.
How the SMS voucher looks when received...
The recipient will receive a text message that says 'Gift Card' and sub-text saying 'You've been sent a gift card for [brand name]'.
When that message is clicked the customer will see the full details of the message, which contains a secure (https) link, the security code to use, and the name of the brand and webstore link.
When the secure link is clicked the customer will see the page (shown on the left image below) that prompts them to enter the pin number. After it's been successfully entered they can either click 'done' on their phone's keypad or click 'Open gift' on the screen.
They will then see the page (shown on the right image below) with the brand's logo and colour scheme (these are pulled from the 'Customise' page of the Toggle dashboard - more details below).
The value of the voucher and the expiry date is also shown.
The 'i' information button in the bottom left pulls up details about your brand - this info is pulled from the 'gift email' on the Customise section of your Toggle dashboard - more details on this below.
Adding to Apple or Goggle wallet (whichever is installed on the phone) will also appear. Clicking this allows customers to save the voucher to their digital wallet if they prefer to use that instead.
Here's taster of the full journey for receiving the text message:
How to redeem an SMS voucher
To redeem the voucher using SMS, the customer needs to click the 'Use now' button.
Two options to redeem the voucher will appear:
The unique voucher number (that can be used to manually key in at the till or any online integrated platform you have, like Shopify)
And a QR code, if the option to scan the voucher is available at your tills.
How to customise the SMS vouchers
The general layout of the SMS voucher is fixed - e.g. the locations of the buttons and logo. The text message is also fixed and cannot be edited.
The colour scheme, logo, and text contained within the SMS voucher use your existing webshop and email styling.
To edit the colours (but bear in mind any changes apply also to the front-end of your Toggle shop and the digital email vouchers), go to Customise > Colour on your Toggle dashboard. Find out more about the colours here.
To edit the wording in the SMS voucher (such as how to redeem) go to Customise > Gift email. Find out more here.
Reporting for SMS vouchers
The Balance Adjustments report will show SMS orders under the "Fulfilment method" column.
Here's an example of this below:
Pricing and billing
The standard charge for your customers is £0.30 per SMS message.
This cost is passed on to the buyer at checkout - there’s no cost to you.
At the end of each month the Toggle Accounts team will send you an invoice for the SMS sends (£0.30) for any purchases made using SMS during that month.
Limitations (current release)
At the moment it is...
Not possible to resend an SMS voucher
Not possible to send a free of charge (foc) SMS voucher to a customer
Only UK mobile numbers that are supported
In future updates to this SMS feature we plan to make these three things possible / allow other non-UK mobile numbers to work.
